Perro del Sol (Sun Dog) by Hope College Professor Billy Mayer was a gift to the City of Holland in 1984 from March Festival. A sun dog is an atmospheric optical illusion that consists of a bright spot on both sides of the sun.

In Centennial Park, thousands of annual plants are used to create this 10’ X 12’ “open book” cover of this classic novel by Frank L. Baum. The iconic yellow brick road leads you to Herrick District Library where it continues through landscaped areas.
The statue was donated by Peter H. Huizenga family and dedicated May 1997 during the city’s Sesquicentennial. The statue is in honor of Holland’s founder Reverend Dr. Albertus C. Van Raalte, founder of Holland and Hope College.
